True to their appointment for the second fortnight every May, Agiopoulia spends these days in the National Park of Lake Kerkini. Hundreds of birds pass through the area every day, coming from Africa, going to their breeding grounds. Their favorite delicacy is the berries that are abundant in the area and especially on the eastern embankment of the lake.
They are always observed during this period and never on the return trip to Africa during which they follow another route. Hooded owls build their floating nests using leaves and other materials from aquatic plants, while both sexes help build the nest which is “anchored” to avoid being swept away by the waves and wind. The nest must be constantly maintained by adding materials, to follow the water level of the lake which during this period increases.
