The landscape of the lake in Northern Greece that seems to have sprung from a painting calms the mind and calms the eye. The reason for the artificial lake of Kerkini in the prefecture of Serres, 98 km north of Thessaloniki and 35 km from Serres.
What impresses its visitors, apart from the magical image of its water embrace, is nothing but the riparian vegetation, water lilies and the abundance of fish. It is no coincidence, then, that this is one of the most important wetlands in Greece. In what one must do here to enjoy all the magic of the place and the natural beauty of the lake in its majesty, definitely a walk with “float” in its calm waters.
The curious thing about Lake Kerkini is the fact that out of the 2,000 total water buffalo in the country, about 1,600 are located around Lake Kerkini. This rare breed of farm animal has been on a conservation program since the 1990s due to the risk of extinction.
