Lake Kerkini: boating and bird-watching

Theodoros Angelopoulos chose her as the setting for his film “The weeping meadow”. Foreign nature lovers visit it for the protected wetland, for the pelicans, the ospreys, the cormorants and the herons. Lake Kerkini was created in 1932 with the construction of a dam on the river Strymonas, in the village of Lithotopos. As a result, it became a favorite place for birds – migratory and non-migratory – and especially the wetland, in the northern part of the lake. Low vegetation, swampy waters and suitable climate make the area an ideal place for birds. More than 300 species have been recorded, including the endangered silver pelican and lagona.

The best time to observe the birds is May, when the birds return from warmer climates. The villages around the lake organize festivities, while the area is flooded with bird lovers from all over the world. In addition to birds, the lake also gathers many fish, mainly carp and gulls. Wolves, jackals, hares and wild boars also belong to the fauna of the wider area.Lake Kerkini is protected by the Ramsar Convention (signed in 1971 and concerns wetlands of international importance) but also by the European network “Natura 2000”.

The sausages of Heraklia

The town of Heraklion is famous for its marathon August festival, lasting 7 days, but also for the sausages of Heraklion or Tzoumagia (the old name of the town), which are thin and slightly spicy. Visit the bazaar on Friday, try the sausages and get for the house from Vassilis Kokozis (T / 23250-22.219).

Morning wake up with a view

Right next to the lake and near the Kerkini dam, Hotel Erodios has a unique view. That is why all its rooms are built on a slope and have all large windows, so that visitors, as soon as they wake up, can see the view of the lake and the plain of Serres that stretches as far as the eye can see. Equally great is the hotel-cafe-restaurant, which is built on the last level (all facilities are built in steps, so that visibility is unobstructed and from everywhere). Information T / 23250-28.070
